How do you boil crabs? Boiling crabs is actually very easy and can be done by anyone in the household! Boil water and add salt, about 35g per liter. The amount of salt content varies greatly from person to person so here it is important to get a little familiar with testing. but a simple rule of thumb is: It should be a little saltier than seawater. If you are boiling by the sea you can actually use salt water which is easily available!

Drop one crab into the boiling water one at a time and let the water boil again before dropping another crab in. Let it boil for 15-20 minutes depending on the size. The largest crabs need 20 minutes. Then take the crabs out of the water and let them cool on their backs for at least fifteen minutes. If the crab is to be saved for a later occasion, it should be refrigerated after it has cooled.

Whether the crab should be dead when you put it in the water is a debated topic, the most normal thing is to put live crabs in the boiling water, but then you may experience that some "food" comes out of the crab and dirty the water. Nothing dangerous, but then the water must be replaced if you have to boil it in several rounds.

Another method is to put them on ice before boiling, which renders them unconscious, which many believe is more humane. You can also stab a knife through the "head" before putting them in the water.

How do you clean crabs? Cleaning crabs is not that difficult. Start by breaking off the claws and then lift up the "house" of the crab shell. Take care of the crab shell. Despite the slightly unappetizing color and consistency, the taste is heavenly when mixed with the lighter and more flavor-neutral meat. Perfect on a slice of bread with butter, lemon pepper, dill and desired accompaniments.

Then remove the so-called pope by pressing down on the flap in the middle between the eyes with two fingers. Then remove the gills on each side of the body. After removing the gills, you can split the body in half along the "middle strip" that comes into view when you remove the two loose "flaps" and then you can simply dig out the food. This is a job that takes a little time but is really worth it! The claws, on the other hand, are a much easier and faster job. Here you simply use a nutcracker to open the claws and dig out the meat that you find. And nothing is better than eating the claws as finger food. "The spareribs of the sea".
